April Fools Hospitality

April 5, 2011

Traditionally April Fools Day is a time that kids and young adults love to play practical jokes on others. However, this April 1st the youth Group from the Mt Kisco United Methodist Church did anything but that. The kids gave up their Friday night to prepare a meal for the homeless. The UMC belongs to a group of local houses of worship that take turns “hosting” the homeless. They provide shelter and two meals (breakfast & dinner) for a week.

Tonight’s activities were organized by Todd Rendle and Meg Gaffney (both of whom have kids that belong to the group). When asked why he thought his son should be part of this Rendell replied “I want my son Henry to start  understanding about community service and to see the older kids doing something good”. Meg Gaffney echoed those thoughts and added that she “feels truly blessed with all that she has” and felt it was time to give back. She knows how quickly ones circumstances can change and that anyone can become homeless these days.

The most touching part of the evening came when the homeless arrived and the kids actually served them. It was wonderful seeing them interact with one another. It was an inspirational moment for all those involved.

In addition to community service activities the youth group participates in monthly activities such as Rock climbing, hikes, bowling and ice skating. If you would like information about the youth group (you don’t have to be a member of the church to join) or shelter for the homeless please drop me a line.

One minor clarification, Meg did all the organizing. I showed up, watched the kids work hard and have fun, and then I ate some pizza that someone else paid for.
