Kathy Feeney is Selling Her House- part two

February 21, 2012

Deciding to sell my house was the easy part; now it’s time for me to ‘practice what I preach’. I’ve been giving advice to my clients for years on how to get their homes ready to sell; it’s time for me to take my own advice.

  1. The first thing I have to do is to purge. I need to get rid of items I no longer want, need or won’t fit into my new house. I am a big believer in recycling so I will be careful not to throw things out that I can sell or someone else can use. I have a friend who can sell things on e-bay for me – check out her Blog at  www.christinanardulli.wordpress.com
  2. My second task is to make a list of things that need to be repaired, replaced or neutralized. Contrary to popular belief – Buyers do not want to come in and “make it their own” by painting and removing wallpaper that is ‘taste’ specific.  I guess the orange color that I LOVE in my dining room has to go. If it is outdated or will appeal to only a few – please do yourself a favor and change it now. No one in this market wants to ‘do work’; they want a house that is priced right and is ‘move in ready’.
  3. It is also time for me to pack away all my collections. Honestly they won’t appeal to anyone else but me and they will only distract potential buyers when they tour the house. So off they go to self-storage or some kind friend’s basement- hint, hint.
  4. Another area that I need to deal with is my window treatments. The treatments were outdated when I moved in but you know it is such a hassle to replace them. First there are the overwhelming choices and styles and then there is the price. The old ones did what they were supposed to do (they kept peeping eyes and the sun out) so I wasn’t in any rush to replace them. Now, I have no choice so Blinds to go here I come.
